What is SMC (Sheet Molding Compound)?

SMC is a dough-like material composed of a thermoset resin (typically polyester resin, vinyl ester resin, or epoxy resin) combined with fillers and additives. Chopped reinforcement fibers (usually 25 mm glass or carbon fibers) are added in an SMC machine to form the compound.

SMC dough is used in compression molding with a hot press method. It is produced in rolls weighing up to 1000 kg.

The fiber content within SMC can be adjusted between 20% and 50%, depending on the application. Similarly, a wide range of additives can be incorporated based on the intended use, such as flame retardancy, UV resistance, insulation properties, mechanical strength enhancement, and color customization.

Production

The paste prepared in mixing tanks (2) is poured onto two polyethylene films in the SMC line (3). Chopped fibers are added onto the paste on the film, and the system is combined so that the paste remains between the two films.

The paste, formed into a sandwich structure between the two films, is passed through compression rollers (4) to ensure that the fibers are thoroughly mixed and impregnated into the material.

Finally, the material is laid into boxes in the packaging section (5) and made ready for shipment or storage.

Depending on application requirements such as usage area, part size, molding temperature, and pressure, SMC paste can be produced in a wide variety of formulations using additives that extend shelf life, as well as colorants, mold release agents, flame retardants, UV filters, and more.
The width of the prepared paste can range between 1000 mm and 1500 mm, depending on the specifications of the production line used.
